Now rested, the newly reformed foursome huddle inside the Inn. As Dolgrin focuses on the Pit of Jorgenfist he feels a slight ripple on the edge of his consciousness and realizes right before the spell takes effect that something has gone wrong.
The group opens their eyes to find themselves in the center of a dark tower, its walls made of smooth black stone. The building feels disturbingly cold and the floor is covered with ice. A look outside of the massive doors reveals the courtyard of Jorgenfist – Dolgrin’s spell having delivered them close to their intended destination.
Midna spots an area of the floor that is ever so slightly depressed and an examination reveals a trap door that opens into a chute descending into darkness.
The group lowers Dolgrin down to explore the chamber below and begins to hear the mutterings of an ancient language rising towards them. As the mutterings grow louder, two glowing green orbs appear in the blackness as the group scrambles to hoist up Dolgrin.
A moment later an ancient body effortlessly levitates out of the darkness, covered in ancient wrappings and clutching an impressive scroll case. The creature’s eyes burn bright green as it breaths a cone of dust upon them, paralyzing Sarruk and Saverio with fear.
Gliding through the air with alarming ease, it swoops past Saverio who is assailed by a flurry of phantom blows despite the creature’s immobile limbs.
Dolgrin unleashes a spell that twists at the creature’s skeleton and the sound of breaking bone echoes audibly through the chamber, but the creature is undeterred, continuing his phantom assault as his chanting grows louder and louder, reaching a fever pitch as an additional spell from Dolgrin turns the creature into a pile of dust that dissipates into the air as the scroll case collapses on the ground.
Upon examination, the case itself is covered with an ornate puzzled locking mechanism covered in ancient runes the group recognizes as Thassilonian in origin. Unable to open the complex locking mechanism, the group elects to explore the chamber below.
Dolgrin heads down into the darkness, followed by the remainder of the group, who tumble down the shaft into the open chamber. A total of eight sarcophagi, covered in runes decorate the room. The group gives the chamber a thorough search but ultimately finds nothing.
With no exit, Dolgrin once again focuses on the pit and attempts to transport the group back.
An Unexpected Ally
Reappearing inside the pit, the heroes head north through the tunnels but are quickly stopped when a female giant emerges from a shadowy corner holding up her hands and indicating that she wishes to parlay.
“I don’t have much time, but know that if you are here to slay Mokmurian, I am your ally… Without my assistance you might find only your graves below Jorgenfist.” -Conna The Wise
After the party agrees to help, Conna explains how Mokmurian challenged her husband’s rule of the tribe, murdering him and taking control of the clan. She explains that Mokmurian dwells in the library below and draws the group a map of the caverns where they find themselves. She claims to have never seen a stone giant wield the type of power that Mokmurian does. Worse, she fears he might be under the control of a darker power.
“I… I fear that Mokmurian may have fallen under the influence of a powerful evil spirit – one of the Ancient Lords themselves. I have heard him whisper a name when he felt he was alone….. ‘Karzoug,’. It’s a name I recognize from secret myths shared by the elders. Karzoug was one of those who enslaved my people, and if Mokmurian has fallen victim to this Ancient Lord’s influence, the danger facing my people and all of you may be greater than anyone knows.” -Conna The Wise
