Now armed with a mental image of the location, he attempts to teleport the group there. Arriving ever-so-slightly off target, the party reorients itself, finds the river and travels north towards the mountain range on the horizon.
After a few hours travel, the heroes spot a cabin built into the side of a cliff face. A workshop sits on ground level, with a 60 foot shaft leading upward to a large cabin perched on the cliff’s edge 60 feet above.
Far away, a mournful howl can be heard faintly on the wind.
The group begins to explore the cabin and almost immediately are faced with the apparition of a dwarf eating gold dust. With little warning, Sarruk is compelled to also eat the dust, but what he perceives as gold dust is, in realty, a handful of filth from the ground floor.
Quickly moving on, the group is attacked by a haunted chain while ascending the stairs. Above, several more apparitions assault the party. Clearly, this was the site of some great evil.
Outside, the weather begins to worsen as snow begins to fall.
In a secret chamber, the party finds a ledger containing information on the various mines of the brothers Vekker, Kerrivek and Silas. The journal shows that all of the mines had played out, leaving the Vekkers penniless.
During the exploration, several more apparitions appear, including one that causes Sarruk and Morthos to run off the side of the cliff, forcing the party to retrace their steps through the lower structure below.
As the heroes finish exploring the cabin, the haunting reaches a fever pitch as the cabin itself begins to shake and sway in a violent manner.
Dozens of dwarven ghosts appear and fly into Morthos, possessing his body and forcing him to attack the rest of the party. As the haunting reaches a fever pitch, the shaking stops. The ghosts slowly fade from existence and Morthos returns to his senses.
One ghost remains. A strange featureless dwarf lacking eyes. He stares at the party a moment and asks for their help.
“You… you are alive? You do not hunger? Ah… that is what I sense in your blood. Greed. You seek the City of Greed. You should abandon your quest, lest you end up like me. Cold. Dead. Eaten. But I suspect you cannot be swayed. Know then that I know the way to Xin-Shalast. I can show you the way, but only if you bring me my brother. He died on a ledge in the mountains a mile’s walk north from this cabin. I can feel his soul out there, still hungry, still insane. Bring his bones to me so that I might reconcile with him. Once he is at rest, I will show you the way so that I might rest as well…” -Silas Vekker
As the ghost finishes his plea, he fades from site. Once more the party is alone with the rapidly accumulating snow.
Zander casts Mage’s Magnificent Mansion and creates an opulent shelter for the party in a pocket dimension.
