With the weather outside raging, and snow having piled up to a height of nearly six feet, the party braves the blizzard, flying back to the cabin, bearing the remains of Kerrivek Vekker.
Upon arrival, the cabin is deathly calm.
Suddenly, the calm is disrupted by another howl, which sends all but Zander into a panic, fleeing inside the cabin for safety. Despite keeping his composure, Zander also seeks refuge, not wishing to be left alone in the swirling blizzard outside.
Without warning there is a smashing on the walls of the cabin which does little to calm the nerves of those inside. After several seconds, the wall is bashed in to reveal a large monstrous creature with the head of a feral elk with sharp antlers. Its humanoid legs end in blackened, burnt stumps. Like something from the most horrifying of nightmares, its mouth, lined with jagged teeth, shrieks as it sees the party.
Zander stands his ground against the beast whose assault is swift and fierce, forcing the wizard deeper into the cabin. As the heroes compose themselves in the face of the nightmare assault, Midna grabs her bow and begins to pepper the monster with arrows while Sarruk and Morthos race to the aid of the companions. Stepping back into a larger chamber, Zander plucks a white dragon scale from his haversack and assumes the form of the creature, taking a defensive posture while the rest of the group assaults the monstrosity.
With wicked claws and a savage bite, the beast takes hold of Sarruk, wrapping him in a tight embrace as it prepares to flee the cabin with the Shoanti as its prize.
Fortunately, a final assault from the remaining heroes is enough to put the beast down. As it loosens its grip on the barbarian, Morthos drives his greatsword through the monster’s chest, ending the untold terrors it has committed.
As the heroes gather their breath, their hear the sounds of arguing from another room and arrive in time to see the spirits of Silas and Kerrivek Vekker. As the argument dies down, Kerrivek hangs his head and shame and vanishes.
The specter of Silas Vekker turns to the party and offers his thanks for putting the spirits of he and his brother to rest. He warns them of what awaits at Xin-Shalast adding that he is certain that they will seek the city of greed despite his warnings.
“You have saved my brother. You have saved me. I should reward you by simply taking the path to Xin-Shalast with me into the beyond, yet I sense that you still harbor a desire to see those golden ruins. Very well. Look to the pages of my ledger for the way, and may Torag watch over you in the darkness to come…"
As he dissipates, several sheets of paper fall to the ground. Upon examination, they are the pages removed from the journal that had been found earlier, pages that contain detailed maps and notes of how to proceed from this precise location to Xin-Shalast….
