Climbing up the dizzying spiral of stairs sized for creatures far larger than themselves, the party eventually makes their way to the Pinnacle’s only floor. As they round the final stairs into a large circular chamber, three giants await their approach and attack immediately, calling out for reinforcements as they do so.
The party moves swiftly to act, but reinforcements arrive almost immediately and all at once, like a tsunami slowly eroding a cliff face, wave upon wave of giants threw themselves upon the party, striking Morthos dead and leaving grievous wounds upon the others.
Spread out and unable to coordinate, the heroes face their greatest challenge with one of their number already fallen. Refusing to give in, the slowly fight back and manage to clear the room while the sounds of reinforcements coming echo through the halls.
With a brief moment to catch their breaths, Midna uses the powerful magic of a scroll of true resurrection to bring Morthos back from the dead, as the tiefling brushes himself off and prepares for the charge of a Rune Giant whom he attacks with extreme prejudice.
Among the ranks of giants a heavily armored woman with raven black hair enters the melee and attacks Sarruk unmercifully with a golden scimitar.
The ranks of giants begin to thin, but so to does the party’s resources. Regrouping their efforts and maneuvering to stay close together they manage to pick off the remaining threats one by one until at last they stand victorious, covered in gore amongst a pile of monstrous bodies.
As they examine the remains, each is overwhelmed with the desire to possess the golden scimitar wielded by the woman warrior. A scuffle breaks out amongst the heroes before Sarruk’s mind breaks free of control and, moving swiftly, he kicks the weapon down the stairs where it clangs down to the ground some 2000 feet below.
Recomposing themselves, the heroes set move off to a side room to recover.
As the open the doors, an apparition appears – an spectral image of their ultimate foe – the runelord Karzoug himself. Karzoug spits an insult at the party and attempts a powerful magic curse on Midna, who thankfully shrugs off the spell and riposte with her rapier. The weapon begins to pulse as she strikes at the apparition and with an audible burst of sound – and accompanying grown from the runelord, Karzoug’s proxy is dismissed.
“And so the fools have found me. I must applaud your tenacity. You are much more persistent than the worms I thought you to be. You are more like hungry maggots in your endless squirming and writhing to get to the death that awaits you at the core of your fate. I am that fate, maggots. I am your death!” -Karzoug
The immediate threat dealt with, the group catches their breath and breaks for the evening, an evening that goes without incident as the heroes inevitable confrontation with the runelord of greed draws ever closer…
