Returning once more to the Golden Road, the heroes ascend the mighty Mhar Massif ascending to dizzying heights that find them short of breath, even with their bottle of air.
Cautious and in search of anything that can benefit them in their final battle, the begin to search the outlying spires, while above, a single spire pierces the sky.
Along the way, they come in contact with an invisible field that Midna and Sarruk seem to ignore. Morthos and Zandar are suddenly wracked with pain as their minds feel invaded by something alien. As the pain subsides, Morthos dons his Sihedron necklace while Zandar does the same with their final Sihedron ring, which allows them to enter inside of the field.
Searching one series of three spires, the party finds intricate facades with with hundreds of arches and balconies. Each spire stands 1,300 ft high, and surround a walled compound.
Inside, a thorough search reveals religious paraphernalia related to worshiping the concept of greed, though nothing else of little value, as the area seems to have been uninhabited for quite some time.
Moving on to a triangular fortress comprised of three slender towers rising 800 feet, the heroes enter the south tower and prepare to make camp for the night. As they rest, they are awakened by the sounds of heavy footsteps and soon dozens of immense stone constructs begin heading down the stairs towards them.
Taking advantage of their slowness, the party gathers their belongings and head up the pathway outside.
Like a long finger pointing directly towards the sky, the heroes make their way towards the tallest of Xin-Shalast’s spires. Hundreds of 50-ft-tall arches surround the base of the structure and allow access to the ground floor, a huge circular room with a 200-foot diameter polished stone circle on floor where it appears something once rested. The area is surrounded by 16 immense pillars that rise up like legs of a spider to support a central column that itself extends to the building’s only level 2,000 feet above. A spiraling ramp wraps around outer circumference of tower up to central column, giving central column a look akin to an immense screw. The entire structure is dizzying and seems physically impossible, and yet it stands before them.
Now late into the night, the party rests before facing the challenges that await above.
